The 2011 growing season proved to be a challenge for many California winegrowers. There was plenty of cool weather that slowed ripening. April frosts damaged a lot of crops, while winds shrank yields during flowering and fruit set. After the winds, cool temperatures remained constant throughout the summer. The result was low crop yields, and harvest approximately three weeks later than normal, Rain in October caused some delays, bringing hot, humid conditions, which helped to further ripen the grapes. Overall, the long hang time and low yields produced wines with great richness and concentration.

This Syrah vintage is a powerhouse of dark fruits and spices, specifically black pepper, and has just enough acidity and tannin to make it capable of pairing with some of the heartier dishes. A few mouthwatering options would be a Syrah-braised lamb shoulder, Paprika roasted leg of lamb, or if you’re feeling adventurous, carnitas.
